T-34/85 (model 1944) build – Part 6:Weathering (fading and streaks)

  • I started off by staining the wooden saw handles with Winsor & Newton “Burnt Umber”.
  • Certain horizontal high points were treated with AMMO Oilbrusher “Olive Green” (A.MIG-3505), in the expectation that the contrast would be toned down with later steps. Other parts, such as the saw blade, were treated with AMMO Oilbrusher “Starship Filth” (A.MIG-3515).
  • AMMO Oilbrusher “Buff” (A.MIG-3517), “White” (A.MIG-3501), “Ochre” (A.MIG-3515), “Rust” (A.MIG-3510) and “Dark Blue” (A.MIG-3504) were added in dots to various parts of the vehicle, later blended in with enamel thinner. Hopefully, this gave a first pass at surface streaking and fading – for example, toning down the very white turret slogan. I think I’ve praised these products before – certainly I prefer using them to regular oil tubes and most other products as well – very convenient.
  • AMMO “Dark Streaking Grime” (A.MIG-1206), AMMO “Streaking Grime” (A.MIG-1203), AMMO “Streaking Rust Effects” (A.MIG-1204) and AMMO “Starship Streaking” (A.MIG-1209) were painted in thin lines on the vertical and sloping surfaces, later blended in with enamel thinner. Later, I used AMMO Oilbrusher “Rust” (A.MIG-3510) to create further rust stains on the fuel tanks and sloping sides of the hull and fenders.
  • At the end of this I noticed that certain areas of chipping had been obscured too much, so once the matt varnish is on I will have to redo certain areas.
  • Of course, using oils repeatedly slows down the drying time, so there has been plenty of time to fit in hitherto undocumented models.
