LRDG F30 truck build – Part 4:Weathering

  • The exhaust was painted with the various colours of the LifeColor rust set.
  • Paint chips were simulated using AMMO “Gun Metal” paint (A.MIG-0622) applied with a sponge.
  • The entire model was washed with a dilute mixture of Winsor & Newton “Raw Umber” oil paint in enamel thinners – the excess being cleaned up with a dry brush.
  • Dots of these oil paints – “Transparent White”, “Lamp Black”, “Raw Umber”, “Yellow”, “Neutral Grey” – were added to the cab and back of the truck and then drawn down vertically, to simulate paint fading.
  • The entire model was sprayed with a 1:2 mixture of Mr.Color “Flat Clear” (182) and Mr.Color Leveling Thinner.
  • Following this a 5% mixture of Tamiya “Buff” (XF-57) in Mr.Color Leveling Thinner was sprayed over the entire model, to tie all the colours together and present an impression of dust.
  • The chassis and engine was drybrushed with AMMO “Gun Metal” paint (A.MIG-0622) and then further brushed with AK Interactive “Dark Steel” (AK086) pigment.
  • The wheels were brushed with AK Interactive “Middle East Dust” (A.MIG-3018) pigment.
  • I had worried about the weight of the resin stowage block so I added wire pins to the bottom of the wheels when fitted and drilled corresponding holes in a wooden base to hold them. The base itself is extremely simple – AK Interactive “Dry Ground” Terrain (AK8015), followed by painting with various desert colours.
  • As could be expected, the back of the truck did not fit all too well with the chassis, to the effect that it is ever so slightly skewed. I will position it so that it is not too noticeable, as, well, I had to get this finished for my own good!
