  • Application of AK Interactive “Rust streaks” (AK013) on vertical and sloping surfaces,  followed by later blending with a brush dampened with white spirit.
  • Application of AK Interactive “OIF and OEF streaking effects” (AK123) on vertical and sloping surfaces, followed by later blending with a brush dampened with white spirit.
  • Application of AK Interactive “Streaking grime for DAK vehicles” (AK067) on vertical and sloping surfaces, followed by later blending with a brush dampened with white spirit.
  • Application of AMMO “Streaking Grime” (A.MIG-1203) on vertical and sloping surfaces,  followed by later blending with a brush dampened with white spirit.
  • I also applied dots of Winsor & Newton “Burnt Umber” and “Raw Umber” oil paint on the upper vertical sides and underneath the sponsons. They were blended in with a brush dampened with white spirit.
  • As I hope the above shows, I have become quite confident in using enamel based products to simulate rust and grime streaks – they seem to behave as I want them to and have the effect which suits me – observable, but not too blatant. One thing which I have felt on some models in the past has been lacking in the final result has been streaks of dry mud, caused by water running down the side or slopes of a vehicle. This tank is an obvious candidate for such effects. After trying one or other things and not liking the result, I thought I would have a go with AMMO’s “Washable Dust” (A.MIG-0105). This is an acrylic mixture, which raises concerns about quick drying times and streaks which are too unsubtle. However, this stuff is said to be designed to be drawn as thin lines and then partially removed with water. I found that you shouldn’t take very long (a minute?) before attempting to blend in the streaks, with a hard brush or cotton tip soaked in water. In the end, I was quite pleased with the outcome. If there are one or two places on the tank where I like the effect less than the whole, then the mud stage should obscure them somewhat. That’s coming next …
