Universal Carrier Mk II – Part 6:Weathering (exterior)

  • Paint chipping was simulated with AMMO “Medium Olive Green” (A.MIG-0609) and Vallejo Model Colour “German Camouflage Black Brown” (70822), applied with a sponge.
  • The exhausts were painted with the various colours of the AK Interactive “Rust” set (AK11605).
  • The entire model was sprayed with a 1:2 mixture of Mr.Color “Gloss” (46) and Mr.Color Leveling Thinner.
  • The entire model was washed with a dilute mixture of Winsor & Newton “Raw Umber” AK interactive “Starship Filth” oil paints in lighter fluid – the excess being cleaned up with a dry brush.
  • Further oil paints or AK Interactive “Black Panel Liner” were used on some areas.
  • To simulate initial dirt, a mixture of AK Interactive “Light Mud” and “Starship Filth” oil paints was applied and selectively removed or brushed down the vertical surfaces.
  • At this stage the tracks were added. The kit tracks looked fine to me, but to have more robust ones I used a set of metal tracks, from a company called R-Model. I liked the pre-cut pins which came with them – saves a lot time. Once assembled, they were treated with Ultimate Modelling Products “Burnishing Liquid” and then a solution of oil paints. The contact points were brushed with AK Interactive “Dark Steel” pigment.
  • Once the tracks were fitted on the vehicle, I proceeded with applying AK Interactive “Europe Earth” pigment to the lower hull. Once happy with it, I fixed the remaining vehicle parts and repeated the pigment process there.
  • Some oil paint mixtures – mostly of AK Interactive “Industrial Earth” – as applied to various places, to change the tone.
  • I added some extra items – a couple of tarps (sculpted from green putty) and scale maps and ration boxes, constructed from paper.
  • The personal weapons in the kit are really nice items. I took the Bren gun, Lee-Enfield rifles and Thompson submachine gun and painted and weathered them as shown in the image.
