Tiger I (mid production) build – Part 3:Painting

Primer: Tamiya “Fine Surface Primer” (light grey) spray can, decanted and sprayed from the airbrush.

Basecoat: A 1:2 mixture of Mr.Color “Hull Red” (29) and Mr.Color Leveling Thinner was sprayed first, to give an underlying colour. On top of that came a 1:2 mixture of Mr.Color “Dark Yellow” (39) and Mr.Color Leveling Thinner.

Camouflage: 1:2 mixtures of Mr.Color “Dark Green” (70) and “Red Brown” (41) were successively sprayed on the upper hull, turret and outer road wheels, somewhat according to the pictures I had of the pattern (only one side is shown, so I guess make up the other side). I thought, looking at similar models and colour plates that this pattern was a bit fuzzy, rather than hard edged. Thus I did it freehand, rather than using any masks. I don’t have a airbrush right now which would allow me to do really fine lines, so it is what it is. I am certain that even if I had one I would need more practice! Looking at it again, the green and brown are a little too faint – then again, I like the base yellow colour!

Details: Paints as shown in the image.

A 1:2 mixture of Mr.Color “Clear Gloss” (46) and Mr.Color Leveling Thinner was sprayed over the entire model. Decals where applied and then those areas covered over with gloss again.
