KV-2 build – Part 3:Painting

Primer: Tamiya “Fine Surface Primer” (light grey) spray can, applied to parts of the hull and turret which had serious amounts of sanding.

Black base: A 1:1 mixture of Mr.Finishing Surfacer 1500 Black and Mr.Color Leveling Thinner was sprayed all over. I wanted to get a dark colour in the recesses and to help with toning down the base coat colour.

Basecoat: A 1:2 mixture of Mr.Color “Russian Green” (135) and Mr.Color Leveling Thinner was then sprayed over the black base. I think that it took two, maybe three, coats to get a decent coverage. This colour is described as being for “USSR tank early WWII”, which is certainly the correct time and place for this vehicle. I must admit that I thought that it looked quite a vivid green in the bottle, but after testing it with a bunch of other Mr.Color paints – and mixtures thereof – I decided to go with it. As always, I expect the colour to darken somewhat with subsequent weathering. On the highest points on the horizontal surfaces of the hull and turret I selectively sprayed the same mixture, lightened with Mr.Color “Character White” (107), to give a little contrast to the uniformity. I will say that these paints sprayed very nicely, with no grittiness (the more dilute mixtures used here than I have hitherto employed might have helped also). Also, compared with the AMMO paints – at least in my hands – I found them to dry to a very robust finish. I think that I will be using this Mr.Color line of paints for quite a few more models to come if they continue to behave this way.

Gloss coat: A 1:2 mixture of Mr.Color “Clear Gloss” (46) and Mr.Color Leveling Thinner was sprayed over the entire model. Naturally, this produced a very glossy finish, which proved impervious to subsequent weathering with enamel based products (to be detailed later). It is indeed very glossy so I might have to investigate using a Flat Clear later on to reduce the glare.

Details:

  • Machine guns: AMMO “Matt Black” (A.MIG-046)
  • Headlight: Citadel “Mithril Silver”
  • Rear light: Vallejo Model Color “Flat Red” (70947)
  • Tow cable: Vallejo Model Color “Black Grey” (70862)
