Ilyushin Il-2 Sturmovik build – Part 3:Painting

It appears that I neglected to take any pictures of the finished model before painting! I do remember that it built well enough, with no problems. Moving on …

Primer: Tamiya “Fine Surface Primer” (light grey) spray can

Base coat (under side): A mixture of 90% Tamiya acrylics (Tamiya XF-23 “Light Blue”) and 10% Tamiya X-22 Clear in Tamiya lacquer thinner (2:1 paint mixture to thinner) was sprayed on.

Base coat (upper side camouflage colour 1): A mixture of 90% Tamiya acrylics (Tamiya XF-52 “Flat Earth” and Tamiya XF-59 “Desert Yellow” in a 5:1 ratio) and 10% Tamiya X-22 Clear in Tamiya lacquer thinner (2:1 paint mixture to thinner) was sprayed on.

Base coat (upper side camouflage colour 2): A mixture of 90% Tamiya acrylics (Tamiya XF-58 “Olive Green” and Tamiya XF-2 “Flat White” in a 9:1 ratio) and 10% Tamiya X-22 Clear in Tamiya lacquer thinner (2:1 paint mixture to thinner) was sprayed on.

Base coat (upper side camouflage colour 3): A mixture of 90% Tamiya acrylics (Tamiya XF-24 “Dark Grey”) and 10% Tamiya X-22 Clear in Tamiya lacquer thinner (2:1 paint mixture to thinner) was sprayed on.

Details:

  • Tyres: Tamiya XF-85 “Rubber Black”
  • Wheels: Tamiya XF-22 “RLM Grey”
  • Undercarriage and wheel wells: Tamiya XF-22 “RLM Grey”
  • Bombs and rockets: Tamiya XF-1 “Flat Black”, Vallejo Model Color “Old Gold” 70878
  • Propeller: Tamiya XF-1 “Flat Black”, Tamiya XF-7 “Flat Red”, Citadel “Leadbelcher”
  • Machine gun: Tamiya XF-22 “RLM Grey”, Tamiya XF-1 “Flat Black”, Vallejo Model Color “Saddle Brown” 70940,  AMMO “Matt Aluminium” A.MIG-194, Citadel “Mithril Silver”
  • Various other details: Citadel “Leadbelcher”, Vallejo Model Color “Copper” 70999, Vallejo Model Color “Red” 70947, Vallejo Model Color “German Camouflage Bright Green” 70833, Citadel “Mithril Silver”, Vallejo Model Color “Black Grey” 70862.

The paint was protected with a layer of Humbrol Clear gloss varnish, the decals applied and glossed over. The largest decal – the combined star and Russian script – threatened to break apart when placing it. I might have lost half a letter or so on one of the lines, so if it reads weirdly to a Russian speaker – that’s why! Finally, Citadel Purity Seal satin varnish was sprayed on.
