Ilyushin Il-2 Sturmovik build – Part 2:Cockpit assembly, painting and weathering

  • A mixture of 90% Tamiya acrylics (Tamiya XF-22 “RLM Grey” and Tamiya XF-2 “Flat White” in a 1:1 ratio) and 10% Tamiya X-22 Clear in Tamiya lacquer thinner (2:1 paint mixture to thinner) was sprayed on the cockpit area.
  • Details were painted with Vallejo Model Color “Black” (70950), “Leather Brown” (70871), “Intermediate Green” (70891) and Citadel “Runefang Steel”.
  • The parts  were painted with Humbrol Clear gloss varnish, decals applied and then Citadel Purity Seal sprayed on.
  • Chipping was simulated with Citadel “Leadbelcher” applied by sponge.
  • Washed with AMMO “Wash for Interior” (AK093).
  • Streaks of AMMO “Streaking Grime for Winter Vehicles” (A.MIG-1205) were applied to the vertical and sloping sides of the cockpit, followed later by blending with enamel thinner.
  • 502 Abteilung “Engine Grease” (Abt160) was brushed over the metallic strips of the fuel tank.
  • AMMO “Airfield Dust” pigment (A.MIG-3011) was brushed over parts of the floor of the cockpit and fixed with enamel thinner.
