Boulton Paul Defiant Mk I build – Part 1:Introduction

The aircraft

Obviously, in retrospect, this appears to be a very odd fighter – no forward firing guns – and no match for the Me 109. The only role where it had success was as a night fighter, the sole example of which can be seen at the Royal Air Force Museum, Hendon (image above) [1].

The kit

Airfix 1/72 kit [2].

Apart from a certain nostalgia for 1/72 scale aircraft kits – probably my chief concern when a much younger modeller – I tend to view this type of model as a testing ground before attempting any larger scale aircraft. Actually, I think I should just dive into a 1/48 scale one next time – I find the 1/72 scale quite fiddly these days.

  2. No doubt about the scale! I do 1/48, but more and more I see the appeal of 1/32.
    It’s rough getting old…
