Imperial Guard Chimera build – Part 3:Painting

Primer: Tamiya “Fine Surface Primer” (light grey) spray can

Basecoat:  A mixture of 90% Tamiya XF-23 “Light Blue” and 10% Tamiya X-22 Clear in Tamiya lacquer thinner (2:1 paint mixture to thinner). Wanting to avoid another green or desert yellow-coloured vehicle I opted for this. I would say that any colour would go for this one – I happen to like the Light Blue when I have used it previously.

Tracks: A mixture of 90% Tamiya acrylics (XF-84 “Dark Iron”) and 10% Tamiya X-22 Clear in Tamiya lacquer thinner (2:1 paint mixture to thinner).

Details:

  • Turret lamp: Citadel “Mithril Silver”, AMMO “Crystal Red” A.MIG-093
  • Turret smoke dispenser: Vallejo Model Color “Black Grey” 70862
  • Turret main gun: Vallejo Model Color “Black Grey” 70862, Vallejo Model Color “Black” 70950
  • Turret machine gun: Vallejo Model Color “Black” 70950, Vallejo Model Color “Cam. Olive Green” 70894, Vallejo Model Color “Brass” 70801
  • Turret skull insignia: Vallejo Model Color “Black” 70950 (drybrushed with Vallejo Model Color “White” 70951)
  • Hull main gun: Vallejo Panzer Aces “Dark Rubber” 306 (drybrushed with Vallejo Panzer Aces “Light Rubber” 305), Vallejo Model Color “Black” 70950
  • Hull side machine guns: Citadel “Boltgun Metal”, Vallejo Model Color “Black” 70950
  • Hull skull insignias: Vallejo Model Color “Black” 70950 (drybrushed with Vallejo Model Color “White” 70951)
  • Hull banner insignias: Vallejo Model Color “Buff” 70976
  • All periscopes: Vallejo Panzer Aces “Periscopes” 309

The paint was protected with layers of Quick Shine Floor Finish and decals applied – just what I liked on the supplied sheet, plus a couple from the spares box. Citadel Purity Seal satin varnish was then sprayed on. I notice a bit of decal “silvering” on the model, which will have to be reduced or hidden in the weathering stages!
