Land Rover WMIK build – Part 3:Painting

Primer: Tamiya “Fine Surface Primer” (light grey) spray can

Basecoat:  A mixture of 90% Tamiya acrylics (XF-57 “Buff”, XF-59 “Desert Yellow” and XF-2 “Flat White” in a 9:1:1 ratio) and 10% Tamiya X-22 Clear in Tamiya lacquer thinner (2:1 paint mixture to thinner). The instructions call for the chassis to be painted black, but I rejected that in favour of the same base colour shown in the real examples displayed here.

  • Spare wheel: Tamiya XF-85 “Rubber Black” and Vallejo Panzer Aces “Canvas” 314
  • Front seats: Tamiya XF-61 “Dark Green”
  • Front seatbelts: Vallejo Model Color “Black” 70950
  • Rear seats: Vallejo Model Color “Black” 70950
  • Rear floor: Vallejo Model Color “Black” 70950
  • Dashboard: Vallejo Model Color “Black” 70950 and Vallejo Model Color “Red” 70947
  • Steering wheel: Vallejo Model Color “Black” 70950
  • Gear stick, brake and pedals: Vallejo Model Color “Black” 70950
  • Aerials: Vallejo Model Color “Cam. Olive Green” 70894
  • Mirrors: Games Workshop “Mithril Silver”
  • Front indicator lights: Vallejo Model Color “Light orange” 70911
  • Front lights: Games Workshop “Mithril Silver”
  • Various other parts: Vallejo Model Color “Black” 70950 or Vallejo Model Color “Cam. Olive Green” 70894

The paint was protected with layers of Quick Shine Floor Finish and then Citadel Purity Seal satin varnish.
