Char 2C build – Part 5:Painting (basecoat)

Primer: Tamiya “Fine Surface Primer” (light grey) spray can

Base coat 1: A mixture of 90% Tamiya acrylics (XF-1 “Flat Black” and XF-10 “Flat Brown” in a 3:1 ratio) and 10% Tamiya X 22 Clear in Tamiya X-20A thinner (2:1 paint mixture to thinner). Sprayed over the entire vehicle. This was then followed with a similar mixture of Tamiya XF-62 “Olive Drab”, excluding the tracks and recesses.

Base coat 2: A mixture of 90% Tamiya acrylics (XF-62 “Olive Drab” and XF-3 “Flat Yellow” in a 3:2 ratio) and 10% Tamiya X 22 Clear in Tamiya X-20A thinner (2:1 paint mixture to thinner). Sprayed over the prominent, accessible parts of the vehicle, leaving the recesses and tracks.

I found painting this one to be quite intimidating – the surface area is quite big, so a lot of time was needed. No doubt many people would opt for more pronounced colour differentiation (or “modulation”) across the surfaces, but this is something which I have not been attracted by thus far. I will hope that subsequent washes and weathering effects will make for an interesting model.
