M3 Grant build – Part 1:Introduction

The vehicle

M3_Grant_with_knocked_out_Panzer_I_1942

This is another model inspired by a programme I saw about the 5th Royal Tank Regiment. The Grant, of course, was a British variation of the American M3 Lee. [1] [2] [3]
Unfortunately, it is very easy to see its deficiencies.

The kit

tamiya_m3_grant

Tamiya 1/35 kit.

Originally I was going to do the Academy kit [4]. It is newer than the Tamiya but I found some of the fitting of the parts – the back end specifically – unacceptable and I do not think that this time it was my fault!

This kit gives me an opportunity to have a better go at the tracks – which are in part rubber – than my last build. Alas, too late I remembered with that one that the tracks were similarly rubber in the centre. I think that I was distracted for parts of that build! Anyway, after the Grant I think it would be wise to move on from the mostly inferior western Allied wartime tanks. Soviet and modern armour beckons…
