SAS Jeep #3 – Part 4:Weathering

  • The exhausts were painted with the various colours of the AK Interactive “Rust” set (AK11605).
  • Paint chips were simulated using AMMO “Medium Olive Green” paint (A.MIG-0609) and Vallejo Model Color “German Camouflage Black Brown” (70822), applied with a sponge.
  • The engine was painted in various dark colours and metallics – I did not intend to be too realistic here, as almost all of it would be hidden in the finished model.
  • The entire model was washed with a dilute mixture of Winsor & Newton “Raw Umber” oil paint in enamel thinners – the excess being cleaned up with a dry brush. Extra oil paint was drybrushed on the tool handles, to give an impression of grain.
  • To simulate dirt many parts of the model were selectively treated with a wash of Abteilung 502 “Light Mud” (Abt125) and “Dust” (Abt003) in enamel thinners, with the excess being removed using a dry brush.
  • The entire model was sprayed with a 1:2 mixture of Mr.Color “Flat Clear” (182) and Mr.Color Leveling Thinner.
  • A mixture of light coloured pigments were brushed onto the surfaces – in various intensities – followed by medium coloured pigments. All was fixed in place by applying a 1:1  mixture of AK Interactive “Pigment Fixer” (AK048) and enamel thinners by brush.
  • Small amount of Abteilung 502 “Sepia” (Abt002) oil paint in enamel thinners was flicked from a brush onto selective surfaces to break up the pigment texture.
