SAS Jeep #2 – Part 4:Weathering

  • The exhausts were painted with the various colours of the AK Interactive “Rust” set (AK11605).
  • Paint chips were simulated using AMMO “Medium Olive Green” paint (A.MIG-0609) applied with a sponge, reflecting perhaps an original green colour?
  • The engine was painted in various dark colours and metallics – I did not intend to be too realistic here, as almost all of it would be hidden in the finished model.
  • The entire model was washed with a dilute mixture of Winsor & Newton “Raw Umber” oil paint in enamel thinners – the excess being cleaned up with a dry brush.
  • The entire model was sprayed with a 1:2 mixture of Mr.Color “Flat Clear” (182) and Mr.Color Leveling Thinner.
  • Following this a 5% mixture of Tamiya “Buff” (XF-57) in Mr.Color Leveling Thinner was sprayed over the entire model, to tie all the colours together and present an impression of dust.
  • The wheels were brushed with AK Interactive “North Africa Dust” (A.MIG-3003) pigment.
  • I put together a quick and simple base for it to sit on, not so much a real diorama but just to hold the wheels securely.
  • All the extras – guns, other parts of the vehicle, stowage – were painted and weathered using the items shown in the images and attached to the vehicle.
  • I thought I would try to add the figures too. I did a quick paint job on them and added them to the seats. My biggest issue with them was getting a natural pose in relation to the objects around them (such as the steering wheel) and … I don’t feel that I succeeded entirely! Oh well, this is somewhat of a nostalgia project, less of a “serious” one.
