Panzerkampfwagen I Ausf. B (Sd.Kfz.101) build – Part 4:Weathering

  • The exhaust was painted with the various colours of the LifeColor rust set.
  • Paint chips were simulated using Vallejo Panzer Aces “Light Rubber” (305) and Vallejo Model Color “German Camouflage Black Brown” (70822), applied with a sponge or fine brush.
  • The entire model was washed with a dilute mixture of Abteilung 502 “Starship Filth” and Abteilung 502 “Blue-Green for German Grey” oil paints (ratio about 1:1) in enamel thinners – the excess being cleaned up with a dry brush or cotton bud.
  • The wooden parts of the tools were brushed with Winsor & Newton “Burnt Umber” and the paint then drawn with a brush to attempt a grain effect.
  • The interior of the headlight and lamps were brushed with AK Interactive “True Metal – Steel” (AK457).
  • Additional parts were treated with Abteilung 502 “Industrial Earth” (Abt090) – for shadows – or “Neutral Grey” (Abt100) – for highlights.
  • The tow cable was washed with a dilute mixture of Abteilung 502 “Dark Rust” (Abt070) oil paint in enamel thinners.
  • To some of the vertical and sloping sides of the hull and turret, Abteilung 502 “Neutral Grey” (Abt100) and “Sepia” (Abt002) oil paint dots were added. Then, using a flat brush, the oil paint was drawn down the sides to simulate streaks of dirt or grime.
  • To simulate dirt the hull, engine deck and fenders were selectively treated with a wash of Abteilung 502 “Light Mud” (Abt125) and “Dust” (Abt003) in enamel thinners, with the excess being removed using a dry brush. These two oil paints were also added as dots to vertical and sloping sides of the hull and drawn downwards using a flat brush to simulate streaks of dirt.
  • The entire model was sprayed with a 1:2 mixture of Mr.Color “Flat Clear” (182) and Mr.Color Leveling Thinner.
  • Wilder “Dry European Mud” (GP08) pigment was brushed onto the lower half of the tank, wheels and tracks and fixed with a 1:1  mixture of AMMO “Pigment Fixer” (A.MIG-3000) in enamel thinners, added by brush. After drying, the same was done with “Dry Russian Earth” (GP04) and finally “Dark European Terrain” (GP09).
  • The upper part of the tank and the top of the turret was treated with the same pigments.
  • Tamiya “Soot” powder was brushed to the exhaust end.
  • Abteilung 502 “Engine Grease” (Abt160) and “Bitume” (Abt004) oil paints, in varying dilutions in enamel thinners, was added to parts of the vehicle, to simulate oil and fuel stains.
